How do I get a website?

It’s actually very easy. Just e-mail us at info@selectperformers.com or ring us on 0870 777 6475. You need to decide what size of website you’d like (for example a 1, 3 or 5-page site) what you’d like on the site (Biography, repertoire list, pictures) and then submit these details to us. We’ll then submit the website for you to view- if you are happy with it we’ll put it up live or change bits that you’re not happy with,

What is hosting? Why do I have to get my website hosted?

Once we have designed your site it needs to be put on the world wide web- ie. The internet. Your content needs to be stored on a server which makes it accessible to computers with internet access throughout the world. Your website will be stored on our Select Performers Directory servers as part of either vocalwebsites, solowebsites, choralwebsites, ensemblewebsites, composerswebsites or selectmusicians.

[top]

Can I have my own domain name?

Yes you can. Many types of domains are available: .com, co.uk, .net, .org, .org.uk and many international ones too. For information see the ‘domain’ part of the ‘about’ section.

[top]

Do I have to buy my domain name through Select Performers?

Although we recommend that you do as it is far more simple and we think our prices are competitive, you can buy your domain name yourself. When you do this you need to get your domain name to point to the Select Performers servers. Most domain-buying services will let you do this- but you are best checking first. Alternitively if you are struggling you could let us try and do this for you by giving us the access details.

[top]

Why does my site appear on my domain name and on one of the selectperformers directory sites?

Your Select Performers website is hosted on one of our directory sites: vocalwebsites.com, solowebsites.com, selectmusicians.com, ensemblewebsites.com, choralwebsites.com composerswebsites.com. This means that for example your domain name: www.yourname.com will point to your website which could be something like www.solowebsites.com/yourname. The website address in the URL box at the top of the browser window will still show www.yourname.com.

[top]

Can I have an individually hosted site on a personalised domain name?

Instead of us hosting your site on one of our directory sites we can for an additional monthly fee host your site on its own domain name. This is really only worth it if you are going to have a fairly large site. Phone or e-mail for further details.

[top]

How many e-mail addresses can I have?

You get 1 forwarding e-mail address with your site. This means that you get an email address such as your.name@solowebsites.com which forwards all incoming mail to your current e-mail address. Ensemblewebsites and choralwebsites customers get 5 free forwarding e-mail addresses per site. For an additional fee you can get more e-mail addresses. There is no upper limit to how many forwarded e-mail addresses you can have.

[top]

I see you offer a free forwarding e-mail address to all customers, but could I have a POP3 e-mail address?

Yes, that’s no problem. Just let us know and we can set one up for you. There is an additional charge for this service. There is no upper limit to how many POP3 e-mail addresses you can have.

[top]

How do I get an audio file on my site?

There are many possibilities. You can e-mail us the file as either a MP3 or WAV format top us and we will upload it onto your website. You can send us your audio on CD format. We also accept tapes and minidiscs but there is an additional fee for that. All your recordings are put on your website in the Real Audio format which allows listeners round the world to hear it while it downloads and also at a quality dependent on the speed of their internet connection. We can also make your recordings available for download in MP3 format for an additional fee.

[top]

How do I get pictures on my site?

If you have a scanner or have your pictures in digital format- the best way is to e-mail them to us. Your pictures are normally put in the JPEG format when on the web, although sometimes they may be in the GIF format. You may e-mail them to us in most formats. Please e-mail us or phone us for more detailed infornation. If you do not have a scanner then you can post the pictures to us and we can scan them for you. As a special opening offer there is no charge for the first two photos being scanned. Please phone for details of costs after this.

[top]

Is there a limit to how much material I can have per site?

It really depends on the number of pages your site will be. If you choose a one-page site then you may want to have a picture, a short biography and contact details. For a good website we recommend that each web page is not too long, and it is best to have different information split over many pages. We will discuss with you how much information we would recommend per page and also how many pages your website should be. Photos, pictures and graphics are a must on a good website- however there should be a balance! Not everyone has broadband connections and so huge fancy graphics on every page is not recommended. Audio files can gobble up a lot of memory. We charge you on how many and how long each audio file is.

[top]

What is bandwidth, and is there a limit how much I can have per month?

The Bandwidth of your website is the amount of material viewed per month in Megabytes (Mb). One Megabyte is around 1 Million characters. You probably won’t have to worry about exceeding a limit as each customer has a bandwidth of 500Mb of Bandwidth per month. If however you site is exceedingly popular and you have many audio files available for download and you exceed this- there is a flat rate of £5 per 500Mb per month.

[top]

How easy is it to cancel?

Easy. We ask that you sign up for a minimum of one year. If you would like we can take your website off before the 12 months is up although we would still ask for the rest of the year's payment. After this you may cancel at anytime. Just write a letter to us asking us to withdraw your website, giving us one months notice.

[top]

How and when do I pay?

You can pay up front for a year or monthly by standing order. At present we do not accept credit or debit card payment so we recommend all payment is done through standing order, bank transfer or by cheque.

[top]

How can I update my site to keep it up-to-date?

It is important to keep websites up-to-date. With most packages we offer upto four free updates per year. If you want to change your biography or tweak your repertoire list or change your contact details then just e-mail us the updated details. You can update your site as much as you want, however there may be an extra charge if you update it more than your allocated amount.
